Pacifism - No so obvious ideas that came up in the discussion

1. Encourage children to "sort it, not report it". (Dennis) 2. A country apparently at peace is ready for war at the flick of a switch, or the turn of a tap - not only the military but the supporting media and social mechanisms are always ready. (Matt)

3. The UNKNOWN SOLDIER is revered for laying down his life, his job of slaying others is not mentioned. (Matt)

4. Is "turning the other cheek" in fact meant to provoke the attacker into offending against Jewish law? (Brian)

5. Thoughtless violent "acts of commission" are not to be thought of as evil, but "acts of omission"; failure to intervene or act well when there is time for consideration can be genuinely evil. (Dennis)

6. In that case there is a lot of evil in the world! (Andrea)

6a. But did the Priest and the Levite, about to officiate at the temple, have compelling religious reasons not to get involved?

7. I am not even sure I am a pacifist! (Marlena)

8. Pacifism does not mean doing nothing, does not equal Passivism. (Peter)

9. A conscientious objector may actually be refusing to abrogate his freedom to make moral and practical decisions. (Peter)

10. We (the powerful weapon wielders) cannot depose all tyrants, put right all wrongs - just look at the world! (Marlena)

11. The social context within which an attack takes place is very important. The drunken attacker's mates may well pull him off - "Come on, you're making a fool of yourself" - rather than join or encourage him. (Dennis)

12. Remember the dictionary definition: "A pacifist believes that it is desirable and possible to resolve international disputes without recourse to war". (Marlena)

13. Don't expect a pacifist to be any more consistent than anyone else when faced suddenly with an actual situation. He may wield a hockey stick next time rather than reasoning with the threatening motorcyclists (Peter). Bonhoeffer decided to accept damnation and join a plot to assassinate Hitler (Marlena).

14. In the latter days of the war, the resolve of disillusioned German people was stiffened by the indiscriminate (and disproportionate) cruelty of the allied bombing campaign.
